when 2.5 year olds choose their own clothes....

Thursday 20 October 2011
Long time readers of my little blog may recall when I first announced Anna's birth I titled the post: "Introducing my future fashionista".  A little tongue in cheek of course, but I was sort of referring to how I expected her to behave in her teenage years or at worst in her tween years.  But it turns out that at the grand old age of 2 and a half, Anna has very firm ideas on what clothes she will wear each day.  Like mother like daughter I guess, because she has a definite preference for skirts and dresses (with stockings) over sensible day care clothes like tracksuit pants and shorts!

She's gotten a little cranky with me lately because all of the sewing I've done has been for me, so I decided to whip out some simple and very quick elastic waist skirts for her.  Seriously, what can be simpler or quicker than a piece of rectangle fabric with a seam at the back, a hem and an elastic waist? The hardest part was picking out the fabric, but once that was done it took about 30 minutes to sew these two up:

Happily she was very excited to see these two hanging in her cupboard and insisted on putting the blue skirt on straight away.  But for a simple trip down to the supermarket this is the ensemble she insisted on wearing:

Not too bad right? Well, have a look at what she chose to wear with it:

She was the best dressed toddler in Coles that day! Look out Zsa Zsa Gabor!

  1. She looks adorable, I like the pink stripe tights and the pink converse shoes. Great job on the skirts.

  3. All six of my granddaughters have thier own fashion sense. Dresses and skirts are always favored. The more twrilly the better. I just made two of my granddaughers dress up dresses that had four yards of 60" fabric in the skirt. Grandma's dresses where very big hits.

  4. My 6-year-old niece was over the other day, and I gave her a Simplicity catalog to cut up and paste on her "fashion inspiration board." She picked out a fur jacket too, and some other things that might be a little, well, over-the-top. I tried to point her to the sweet little classic dresses, with the little Peter Pan collars, but she was having none of it. It's fun to see their own style sense developing, isn't it?

  5. All she needs to complete the look is a tiara! Thanks for the laugh!

  6. I love it! Anna looks adorable!!! Reminds me of my own Fashionista at that age! Sara had definite ideas about her wardrobe then and I'm happy to report that at almost 30, she now gives me fashion advice!

  7. I think she looks fabulous! When my daughter was little, I felt like getting buttons printed up that said "I dressed myself". Colours had to be bright, layers were always present and the more pattern the better. She looked a bit like an orphan heading off to school. Then one morning she came out of her room in black leggings and a black t-shirt. It was weird so I asked her what was up, and she told me that she was a black panther that day! How awesome is that? Enjoy her creativity!

  9. Hahahaha! I learned, early on, to praise my daughter up and down, loudly, with "She dressed herself today!"

  10. She is adorable! My girls were just like that at Anna's age. They also insisted on styling their own hair!
I love your blog and seeing what you are sewing.

  13. How cute! My youngest son has suddenly gotten to be a cool dresser, wanting to wear an unbuttoned shirt over a t-shirt and what not. It must be television. BTW, that first picture of Anna looks strikingly like you - don't know what it is. The eyes maybe?

  16. I'll admit she has style! My youngest DD loved fairy dresses and blunstone boots.

  17. I love the apple skirt! She is too cute. Congrats on your baby news. I just had another boy and I'm so glad my pregnancy days are over. I'm too tired, lol! Wishing you all the best. I have plenty of little boy clothes if you want them. Some of them are hardly used.

  18. She has perfect fashion sense. Next thing you know she will be whipping up her own creations. I remember my sister had a toy sewing machine that did sew, but not very well. I remember she made lots of dolls and doll clothes with it. I have no idea how old she was when she was given the machine, but I would say she was fairly young. By the way, Anna has grown a lot in the last month I think.

  19. Honestly, you can't blame her. She's been influenced from day one by a very, very stylish and welldressed lady. You!
    She looks adorable.

  20. What's wrong with that? It's a fine outfit. You're too old-fashioned and match-match, Mum. She's got the real on-trend mix-up look. Is she related to Oona Balloona in any way?

  21. Ha, Ha! Your Annie sounds like my Eden (who is also 2.5)! It is never a dull moment when she is getting ready in the morning.

  22. Too cute and much more fun than my son who every day declares that he wants to wear a fire truck shirt. Which he doesn't actually have.

  24. Soooo she is a little eclectic.... think about it this way.... she will grow outta the coat sometime... maybe see if you can find her some leggings? Solid color! LoL.... That would help with the day care crawling around and playing part!
